Michael couldn't hold back a grin at the look on Antonia's face. The other two women—the brown-haired one Sam went to, bursting with the news he'd just met "Antonia's friend," and the fair, stately-looking one—he barely glimpsed out of the corner of his eye. But Antonia, wide-eyed, mouth open, and the flush of sheer pleasure on her face—a look he'd happily noticed on other more intimate occasions—Antonia held his attention.

"What are you doing here?"

"Delighted to see you too," he replied, deliberately kissing her cheek. "I heard there was a phalanx of police cars converging on Orchard House. I came to see if you were alright." He pulled a chair over and sat next to her—forget waiting to be asked. "I see you are."

"More or less," she replied.

"Sam told me what happened." He looked at the other two women and offered his hand. "I'm Michael Langton."

They both smiled and exchanged very pregnant glances. He could almost hear them think "Antonia's Potter." Not that he minded being Antonia's in the least.

"I'm Stella," the darker one said, "Sam's mother."

"Elizabeth Connor."

"She used to be my baby-sitter," Sam announced. "Mum, Michael paid for the pudding and drink."

"It's Mr. Langton," she replied briskly. "And what were you…"

"Michael's fine," Michael replied, "and Sam wasn't cadging or anything. We got talking, and I realized he was with you. I was looking for Antonia, so you might say Sam did me a big favor."

A very big favor now that he was right next to Antonia. "I'd been worried there was an accident."

Even the look in her eyes did him in, and he was hard just sitting by her. He was in deep, but what the heck. She had secrets too. The two nice women sitting with her would no doubt pass out if they knew. And as for letting her son sit next to a vampire… "I'm relieved to see you're alright."

"We are," Antonia replied, "but some poor, unidentified woman isn't, and Abel knows how long this will hold up the building, but… can't be helped. We have other projects, and we'll manage."

"How about coming back with me? I wanted to show you a couple of samples."

"I see." Her smirk suggested she knew what samples he had in mind. "Well…" she glanced at the other two. "How about we take the rest of the day off?"

"Good idea!" Stella replied. "Sam wanted to see the maze at Hampton Court, and we never got there over the weekend. Coming with us, Elizabeth?"

The blonde shook her head. "Thanks, but I want to go back to the garden again. If we can't work on the buildings, perhaps we can start renovations outside."

Didn't take much to persuade Antonia to leave first. He didn't just want her in his bed; they needed to talk. What he'd heard the other night had been worrying him ever since; when he'd heard about the panda cars at her house, he'd feared the worst.
